Hi everyone,
I have a couple of questions from pre-med students:
1. What are the different volunteer activities(including medical missions) pre-meds can engage in?
2. What science electives can pre-meds take to prepare well for the MCAT and medical school?

Thanks as always!

Well Tunde,
There are several activities pre-Med students should get involved in. I am not sure if I understand the question...Do you mean activities in DNPT? or outside of DNPT?
Shadowing doctors, mission trips, local community health activities, research etc are all beneficial experiences for you all as you prepare for med school.

Courses I found helpful for the MCAT:
Bio 1 and 2
Physical Chem 1 and 2
Physics 1 and 2
Organic Chem 1 and 2
Genetics
Cell molecular
Embryology
Physiology...thats all I remember for now.

Good luck

1. In thinking about activities for med school, being part of DNPT is already a great start happy :) Anyways, it's definitely important to do the standard ones (cos if not, you'll look silly).. volunteering at a clinic/hospital, shadowing doctors, and maybe a little bit of research. Depending on the kind of school or program you want, you should adjust relative amount of above activities. For example, if you're aiming for a big academic institution or an MD/PhD, you def. need more than a little research.

You also want to stand out from other premeds. So I would advise that you also do something unique as doing so will give you something to talk about during your interviews...for example, talk about a cool project that's non-science related or your love for capturing humanity through photographs happy :)

Also, don't forget to make your professors love you.. excellent recommendation letters go a long way towards filling any gaps you might have in your application!

2. Regarding which science electives to take, the ones Lanre mentioned are definitely important. I would also like to add that I think taking histology would be very beneficial. You have to learn histo for every organ system so you might have an easier time if you find some of the material a bit familiar.

Biochem's another helpful course and if your school offers anatomy, you might wanna consider taking that as well.

If you don't get a chance to take all/any of these, don't worry about it. There are many non-science major ppl in med school who've only taken the minimum science classes for the MCAT and they're not failing out.. neither will you happy :)

Personally if I could go back to undergraduate years, I would major in guitar or literature.
Aishat and Lanre have answered most of your questions. Research, shadowing, community volunteer work is also key. If possible, devote a lot of your time to a project in your community. Also be actively involved in something you are passionate about. For example, if you love debates, participate in a local debate contest or something like that. If you like music, do the same. These kinds of activities would make you a more holistic individual than just what's required to get into medical school and that gets across during your interviews

Keep it up!
