How much do your religious views affect your decisions as a Physician? Though often taken with a grain of salt, it is believed that politics and religion should never be mixed. In the same spirit, I would like to know what you guys think about the mixture of a Physician's faith and his professional obligations? i.e. Your stand on the issues of Abortion, Plastic Surgery and even Homosexuality??? |

Issues u mention dont have to be religious based. I don't agree with the concept of homosexuality but i respect the decision. so i will treat my gay patient the way i will treat my straight pt. remember medicine is a self-less act; dedicating urself to making a difference in one's health. That is why it has taken physicians forever to see medicine as a business instead of a calling.
It is ok to have ur religious beliefs, but when it comes to making a difference in an individual's health irrespective of his/her sexual orientation, religious believes, or take on abortion, you as a physician should put ur opinion aside and do what u think its absolutely best for the pt. Remember the first rule of patient care is.... DO no harm. |

Thank you for your response, and i hope that the people reading this take away a lesson. Though is easier said than done, I want to urge us all to be capable of distinguishing these two facets of our lives. We will all be faced with these issues in practice whether we like it or not. |

I think religion and medicine are inseperable. You just need to look at the universal symbol of medicine, the snake on a stick, a reference to the biblical account of healing resulting from looking up to the symbol appointed by God.
Religion or differing opinion is never an excuse to withold treatment from anyone. As doctors we treat the person and not his opinion. We are to leave our prejudices outside the door when we enter the consulting room. So like a previous poster said, I'll happily treat a homosexual but that doesn't mean i agree with his lifestyle. Each to his own.
Regarding cosmetic surgery it's not a field that interests me so i won't even bother. All i'll say is if i were one, i'll only repair disfiguring defects and refer everyone else to psych!
As for abortion, no way! there's not a chance that i'll ever carry it out. while I believe it may be acceptable in rare circumstances, no be me go do am oooh so i go fit sleep for night! make another person wey get liver pass me go do am. Like I sadi each to their own. |
